Zaros Springs - ZAROS
Zaros SpringThe name itself gives away the abundance of running water in the area, since it comes from the conjunction of the Greek words "za" and "rous", meaning "much flow". Indeed, there are numerous springs around the village, such as Sterna, which is north of Zaros. This spring waters the whole village through a complete community network. Amongst the most important springs is Mati, where ZAROS natural water comes from.
 
Amati Spring - ZAROS
The spring gushes out of the carbonate rocks of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 402 metres. The supply varies from 250 – 450 m3/h. This springZaros Amati Spring is characterized as an overflow spring and for this reason an artificial lake was formed around the spring in 1987, namely, Lake Zaros. The spring’s overflowing water supply the rivers in the greater area and end up at the Phaneromeni dam.  The spring has a stable supply, with a natural reduction in the dry period, suggesting that the supply basin inside Psiloritis is significantly large.  From this point, in the centre of the basin and at a depth of 180m, the water flows naturally through third generation piping to the VOTOMOSS.A factory. The excellent physical, chemical and microbiological quality, as well as the water's excellent stability have characterised the Amati spring as the unique Natural Mineral Water spring in Crete.
 
Sterna Spring - ZAROS
The Sterna spring, north of Zaros, supplied Ancient Gortyna. The water supply network in the area has been developed since antiquity.  There are still ruins of the Roman aqueduct. The spring’s supply varies from 100 – 200 m³ per hour between the dry and wet period.
